BROOKLYN COACH HOUSE: BRINGING LIGHT THROUGH LIMITATIONS
One challenge of renovating historic landmark buildings can be working with the original structure’s light source, which was true in this Brooklyn coach house. The architect added a spiral stair crowned by a skylight to the center of the space that enabled natural light to flow into the darker interior. I enhanced this formal element by selecting a material palette of warm and neutral tones with a richness of texture to create a welcoming urban environment.
